How to avoid scholarship scams

Rule to remember:  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The following items are possible red flags for scholarship scams:

Request payment fee

Require your credit card number, bank account number, social security number, etc.

Guarantee scholarship winnings

bullet

Do not include a telephone number

bullet

You are notified as a recipient of a scholarship for which you didn't apply.

You should not pay money for scholarship searches.  You can do this for free through books and the Internet.
